4 Tips for B-School Group Projects In business school, group projects are a way of life. Most of your core classes and many of your electives will involve assignments where you must work in teams to get the job done. With so many ambitious, driven personalities in one environment, how can you work together cohesively? How can you make the experience less antagonistic and more enjoyable? Tips for tackling business school group projects include identifying the strengths in your group, deciding on the projects goal, and devising a plan. When taking on b-school group projects, dont panic. Here are four tips to memorize now: 1. Discuss the project with your b-school group members Even though your professor may have discussed the project in class, and even though the project may be clearly outlined in your syllabus, each of your group members may have a different interpretation of what the project entails. Listen to each persons perspective on the project, as well as the ideas he or she has for executing it. Dont be afraid to share your own ideas too. You may not necessarily wish to lead the project, but steering the direction of the conversation in a productive manner will help to generate a positive experience. Then determine what each person actually wishes to do. Its important to note that these might not be the same things. For instance, your group member with a financial consulting background may have a talent for creating spreadsheets. However, she may be attending business school to transition into a career in marketing, and would thus prefer to construct the PowerPoint presentation. Insisting that she spend all of her project time managing information in Excel may not yield the best results. Instead, jointly decide what roles your project requires and who would be the best fit for them. 3. Decide on your b-school groups goal Ensure everyone is on the same page about what you wish to accomplish with this b-school group project. One classmate may hope to achieve the highest grade possible in order to maintain his GPA, while also using this opportunity to make connections in a new industry. Conversely, another classmate may hope to get the project done as quickly as possible, so that she can concentrate on recruiting season. Your group should come to a consensus on your goals for the project. Set expectations for the time, effort, and deliverables each person will contribute in order to minimize tension and confusion while you work together as a team. Make a plan for executing your b-school group project As a group, answer the following questions about your project: Who is going to do what? What is the deadline for each part of the project? This doesnt necessarily mean that everything will go smoothly in completing the project. But writing down a plan of action will provide an organized framework. Perhaps you have listened to the valuable advice of older siblings and high school guidance counselors, or youve read multiple blog posts about what to expect at college. The truth is, though, no matter how prepared you feel, there will still be certain aspects of college that surprise you once you arrive. I wish I had known more about changing my major, understanding the importance of networking, and recognized the reality about student loans. Arriving at college freshman year, it can be frustrating to stumble upon things you arent prepared for. Have no fearit will get easier. Here are a few things I wish I had known before freshman year of college: [RELATED: A Summer Checklist for Incoming College Freshmen] I wish I had known that I might change my major one or more times Some high school students enter college with a pre-declared major. These students often feel confident when starting down this path, but there is no predicting what might happen throughout the four years of your undergraduate career. Your interests might evolve, or you might complete an internship that opens your eyes to a new and exciting field. Perhaps you have dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, and you should certainly entertain that option if you feel a drive to in your heart. Somewhere along the tiring route to medical school, you may be dissuaded by intensive chemistry classes and decide that medicine is not right for you. If such a situation occurs, know that you are far from being alone; quite a few college students switch their majors at least once. To find your true professional passion, take a variety of classes and keep an open mind. More importantly, do not feel discouraged if you need to submit a change of major form. It is far better to re-do a semester of college than to be discontent with your degree forever! At your school, aim to broaden your knowledge and to become an expert in your intended field. Meanwhile, create strong connections with like-minded individuals, including: Classmates Professors Advisors. A classmate could prove to be a treasured friend, a professor could guide you and write you a wonderful letter of recommendation, and an advisor could answer key questions about employment and graduate school. A solid academic record is only onealbeit a very substantialpiece of the puzzle that potential employers consider in the hiring process. Networking and making a name for yourself in any organization you are a part of could help move your resume to the top. I wish I had known that I should accrue as little debt as possible According to USA Today, the average student loan debt in the United States is more than $20,000. Although this figure may not seem astronomical, college students should take care to keep their loan debt as low and as manageable as possible. There is only a six-month grace period for most student loans, and it may take six months or longer for college graduates to find employment. It is critical that students be aware of the terms of their loans and whether their loans are subsidized or unsubsidized. With subsidized loans, the federal government pays interest so long as the student is attending college or the loan is in deferment. Unsubsidized loans, by contrast, start accruing interest immediately after the loan is disbursed. The difference between a subsidized and an unsubsidized loan can mean thousands of extra dollars in the long term, so be sure you understand the loan details before you sign any paperwork. Starting college is both a frightful and a stimulating prospect. Consider the advice of seasoned college graduates, but also weigh in your own judgment and experiences as you open this next chapter. Non-conditional questions can be viewed as the opposite of conditional questions and no new information will be set forth. So how do you tackle this question type? Well, since there is no new information you will have to depend on the information you already have as well as the inferences and diagrams you have already made. The question will either ask you for something that (1) must be true or (2) must be false/could be true. The former is straightforward, and you just need to find the answer choice that is always true, a good hint is to look at the inferences you already made. The latter is a bit more complicated. Here, you will have to play a game of elimination. Most likely you will have to check each rule given and see which answer choice violates a rule. Remember this general rule of thumb to differentiate the two non-conditional questions and you will save t ime on your approach and analysis.

About the task I created these Who would you hire? candidates for a Learning Theories class. We were using Driscolls book and had just finished talking about Gagné. The lesson was on Constructivism, but I didnt want to use an instructivist lesson to teach constructivist principles. I devised this little task instead. (The voices, by the way, are both me, but I used Audacity to raise and lower the pitch of the recordings to make them sound different.) In groups of 3, students were first asked to imagine a context where training is needed, to set a budget and delivery date, and then convene a hiring committee. The first audio was played for each candidate. They were then told to ask each candidate a question, and I played the second audio. While they were deliberating in groups, I gave each group one of these messages from Head Office at random to complicate matters: 1) The boss has decided to increase spending on training. Your training budget just got bigger. 2) The boss has decided to reduce spending on training. Your training budget just got smaller. 3) The boss has decided to give you one more month to develop your project. 4) The boss has decided to move the deadline up by a month. You have to work faster.
